The Danish Cartoons Controversy

When the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten first printed caricatures of Prophet Muhammad over two years ago, it inflamed global outrage from Islamic communities all over the world. With the re-printing of one of the caricatures, the same feelings have been rekindled, and Muslims are expressing their anger once more. But are the violent reactions to the cartoons justified? Or should Muslims find better ways to show their devotion to the Prophet? In this article, I explain where the misunderstanding between the West and the Muslims lies, and what Muslims must do whenever their religion or the personalities they revere are attacked. (more…)

Secularism in Turkey

Turkey’s recent decision to lift the headscarf ban in universities has been met with strong opposition by many Turks, who regard it as an attack on the secular identity of the country. This leads us to ask: What is secularism? And to what extent can it go to limit the religious freedoms of a country’s citizens? (more…)
